Hearty Ground Beef and Cabbage Skillet

Ingredients:

1 pound lean ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
1 small head of cabbage, chopped
2 cans (14.5 ounces each) diced tomatoes with juice
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 tablespoon olive oil

Directions:

Sauté the Onion:

In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium heat.
Add chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.
Brown the Ground Beef:

Add ground beef to the skillet with the onions.
Cook, breaking up the meat, until browned and no longer pink, approximately 5-7 minutes.
Season the Mixture:

Stir in garlic powder, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper.
Mix well to combine flavors.
Add Cabbage and Tomatoes:

Incorporate the chopped cabbage into the skillet.
Pour in diced tomatoes with their juice.
Stir thoroughly to combine all ingredients.
Simmer:

Bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
Reduce heat to low, cover, and let it simmer until the cabbage is tender, about 25 minutes.
Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Adjust Seasoning and Serve:

Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed.
Serve hot, optionally over rice or with crusty bread.
