Savory Steak Sandwich with Caramelized Onions and Gruyère
Ingredients:

2 medium steaks (ribeye or sirloin)
1 French baguette, cut into 4 pieces
2 large onions, thinly sliced
1 1/2 cups beef broth
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme (or 1 teaspoon fresh thyme)
Salt and pepper, to taste
Directions:

Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the sliced onions, thyme, salt, and pepper. Cook slowly for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden and caramelized. Pour in 1/4 cup of the beef broth to deglaze the pan and intensify the flavor. Let the liquid reduce, then remove from heat.

Cook the Steak: Season the steaks generously with salt and pepper. In a separate skillet over medium-high heat, sear the steaks for 3-4 minutes per side for medium-rare (adjust time for desired doneness). Remove the steaks, let them rest for 5 minutes, and then slice thinly.

Assemble the Sandwich: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Layer slices of steak over the bottom half of each piece of French bread. Top with the caramelized onions and sprinkle a generous amount of Gruyère cheese.

Melt the Cheese: Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Serve: Close the sandwiches and serve warm with a side of beef broth for dipping, if desired.
